WINDMILL HARBOUR Windmill Harbour was created in 1981 and is located on a 172-acre peninsula on the Intracoastal Waterway immediately past the bridge from the mainland to Hilton Head Island. It is also the new home of the South Carolina Yacht Club.

The dominant physical characteristics of Windmill Harbour are its mature woodlands, high elevations, easy accessibility by water and highway, and miles of spectacular views of the Intracoastal Waterway and saltwater marshes. Unlike some of the other Hilton Head Island communities, the facilities of Windmill Harbour are designed solely for the use of property owners, residents and their guests. The primary focal point of Windmill Harbour is its 15 acres of inland harbour - twice the size of Harbour Town. An innovative, but simple user-operated navigational lock transports sail and powerboats from the tidal fluctuations of the adjacent Waterway into the stable waters of the yacht basin. A deep-water pier outside the harbour accommodates sailors picking up passengers and supplies - or those who wish merely to tie up long enough for a cold drink or lunch. Up to 270 slips are available. The Sports Center serves both the pool and tennis court areas. It contains dressing areas, saunas, an outdoor Jacuzzi pool, a large community pool with a wading area for children, shower facilities and ample deck space for lounging or community gatherings. The Windmill Harbour Club overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway and the main harbour basin. It contains dining, lounge, food preparation and social area facilities designed to satisfy a variety of uses for this small, private community. Other amenities include miles of walking and biking paths, a playground and a cable television and security network that permits constant monitoring of each residence. Restrictive covenants permit the development of low-rise, single family detached homes, townhomes and villas.
