At
the gates of this tranquil community are resort facilities
that include a magnificent Southern-style clubhouse, three
championship golf courses (Barony and Robbers Row alternate
as private courses on a monthly basis). Planters Row is
always open to resort guests. Also part of the resort facilities
is a five-star racquet club. The Port Royal Racquet Club,
former home of the World Couples Mixed Doubles Championship,
is one of only four places in the country that has three
grand slam surfaces. A championship croquet court is one
of the two regulation croquet courts in the State of South
Carolina and the site of the 1986 U.S. Croquet Championship.
Located
just outside its borders is The Westin Resort and calls
Port Royal Plantation its oceanfront home offering fine
dining, a superb health club and is rated the only AAA five-diamond
hotel in the Carolinas.
One
of the original Hilton Head Island Plantations, its site
is rich in Civil War History. The Confederate Ft. Walker
was destroyed, but the earthen works of Ft. Sherman, built
in 1852 and named for General Thomas W. Sherman of the Union
Army, still stand. The remains of one of the few steam cannons
in U.S. military history is found within the Plantation.
It was built in 1902 and fired only twice before it was
dismantled.
